| PRODUCTS NOT TO SELL ON EBAY 1. Products under $10Ebay is often thought of as a place to go to find bargain products much like a flea market and many sellers are searching for products to market with this in mind. This is a mistake that many, many newbie ebay sellers make and they never get a chance to create the business they are dreaming of because its over before it begins. I have purchased many products directly from retail stores and made anywhere from 20% to 100% profit on these items. Why? Ebay is a multi million dollar business that recieves visitors from all over the world, not just your local town.- Ebay customers are recieving a service by not having to drive, waiting in line, and searching throughout a store to purchase their items- Ebay customers often spend more than they intended just because the get in a "battle of bids" with other shoppers- You are much more likely to sell on ebay based on knowledge of your product, and your reputation. Customers are suspecious of low prices, espeacilly on ebayA big problem with selling items under $10 not just on ebay but online in general, is the shipping. Its likely that the cost of shipping on a $5.00 item will cost more than the item itself. While I encourage all ebay sellers to not put so much emphasis on price, at the same time no one is going to buy a rediculously price item either. For example: A set of ten golf balls might sell for $5.00 when you ad shipping the customers price just doubled. Yes I said purchasing items on ebay is a convient service, but the service is not worth paying double price for.2. Products everyone else are sellingMany sellers assume that a good way to get started selling on ebay is to sell the same items everyone else is. Ofcourse these hot items such as ipods, cell phones are in great demand, however the sellers selling these items are far more established on ebay and familiar to buyers. These ebay sellers have been building contacts for years and are able to purchase these items in larger bulk lots than you will, so they will always be able to sell at a lower price than you. 3. Things you love...but no-one else doesThis seems obvious enough, but it isn't I see many many newbies attemting to create a niche from a hobby that thier is no popular interest in. Selling on ebay requires a great deal of research, you need to know what your customers are looking for, and just because you are into a certain hobby doesn't mean everyone else is. 4. Difficult items to ship - fragile itemsThese are not bad items to sell all together. Many sellers do very well with these items but these items are not so great to start out with. These items are a high shipping risk, even if packed properly. As a new ebay seller any negative feedback at this early a stage could be very damaging to your reputation. Your feedback is based on a perceintile, so if you only have 1 negative but have only sold to ten customers you are already have a 90% most ebay buyers will be scared away if feedback is under 98%. 5. Large ItemsEbay shoppers are mostly impulse shoppers, buying a sofa or a television is something shoppers generally research before buying. Shipping of items such as these is also very cosltly untill you are shipping enough every day to bargain with the shipping companies. |
